The economic crisis not only affected the middle class and the lowest incomes, it also took its toll on the world's largest fortunes, or at least that is what the data says, since from 2016 to 2017 the number of millionaires grew by 10.6%, showing the recovery that we have been experiencing in the last two or three years.
In this article we use data from Capgemini's World Wealth Report to analyse the concentration of the world's rich, spread across different countries and compared to the population they have.
Below are the 15 countries with the most millionaires in their population:
15. Russia
The host country of the World Cup is at the bottom of the Top 15 countries with millionaire citizens, with a total of 189,000 millionaires in 2017 out of a population of 144.3 million.
14. Spain
The next country on the list is Spain, which shows the economic potential of European nations – as we will see in the first positions. In addition, the great pillar of the country's wealth, Amancio Ortega, always dances among the first places in the world ranking.
13. South Korea
The first Asian country in the ranking, South Korea, is an example of technological and commercial avant-garde, being a relevant case for overcoming the fact that to the north there is a border completely impermeable to business.
12. Netherlands
Second European country on the list, one of those with the highest percentage of millionaires. The kingdom of Willem-Alexander, whose capital is the progressive Amsterdam, has 255,000 millionaires in a population of 17 million.
11. India
India is a country of contrasts, as it has one of the highest poverty rates in the world but at the same time has a high number of millionaires, as demonstrated by its eleventh position in the ranking of this article. This republic has 263,000 millionaires in a huge population of 1.324 billion people.
10. Italy
Third on the list, despite the recurring political instability of the transalpine country – which is said to be the testing ground for the rest of Europe – the truth is that its list of millionaires shows that within its borders there is enough raw material to amass a good fortune. In Italy there are 274,000 millionaires in a population of 60 million.
9. Australia
The great power of Oceania is home to a fascinating mix of unspoiled nature, tradition, economic prosperity and urban avant-garde. Australia is a success story in terms of the social development of a highly industrialised country. In its case, it has 278,000 millionaires out of a total population of 24 million, which means that the percentage of large accounts is enviable.
8. Canada
Another benchmark in the management of a Welfare State, with one of the populations with the highest average income in the world. Canada is an enviable country in almost every way, including its list of millionaires, with 377,000 in a population of 36 million.
7. Switzerland
Europe is back on the list of one of the safest and most prosperous countries in the world. Switzerland is a magnet for huge fortunes because, although it is not recognised as such, it plays by the rules of a tax haven. In this Central European country there are a total of 389,000 millionaires in a population of 8 million.
