For years, I relied heavily on SMS-based two-factor authentication (2FA) linked to my phone number for securing my online accounts. It felt convenient—just a quick text with a code and I was in. However, after deciding to cancel my phone number, I had to rethink my entire security setup. Also, losing access to your authenticator app can lock you out if you haven’t saved backup codes or enabled cloud backups. Despite these caveats, I believe the benefits far outweigh the risks. If you’re thinking about quitting your number or just want a more secure, flexible authentication method, I highly recommend making the switch to app-based authentication only.
