Moderation on TikTok: How it Works

Post by Bappy11 »

TikTok will automatically remove videos that violate the rules upon upload. In this way, the popular platform hopes to improve safety for viewers and content moderators. However, this also means that videos that do not violate the rules can be removed. TikTok estimates that this will happen in 5% of cases.

How does content moderation work so far? When you upload a video to TikTok, it first goes through software that checks whether it meets the conditions. If a video potentially violates one of the rules, it is 'flagged' and checked by a member of the safety team. If that person then confirms the violation, the video is removed. The creator of the video is notified of this and is given the opportunity to object.

TikTok wants to improve this process and announces that in the coming weeks new buy bulk sms service technology will be rolled out in the US and Canada that automatically removes videos, already upon upload. It is unknown whether this also applies to Europe. The automation of content moderation will only take place for special categories for the time being. Starting with videos with minors, violent content, (adult) nudity and sexual activities, illegal activities and so-called 'regulated goods' (think alcohol and cigarettes).

The platform does admit that the technology cannot possibly be 100% accurate, and it continues to offer creators the opportunity to appeal the removal of their videos.
