Theory of weak ties

Post by arzina998 »

Know what you need
Let other people know what you're planning
Realize that the goals you set in life are bigger than yourself. Let others know what you need
Recognize that you are a (knowledge) resource for others. Ask how you can contribute.
Perhaps the most important of the four is the last one. Networking is not about you, but about connecting with others. And seeing where you can strengthen each other. So, now you can confidently go to your next networking party!

But back to the book. What appealed to me less was the extensive introduction to the history of networks and the role this played in, for example, the development of China. Despite my international background, I found that a bit too far-fetched for a book about the essence of networks. The substantiation with Granovetter's ' Theory of weak ties ' appealed to me more. Everyone who works in community management, social media or marketing should know this theory. If not, see the short hotel contact database summary here:

Everyone can gain value from their network
What appealed to me most in the book: networking is about getting to know people. Because they are worth more than money. Whether you are an entrepreneur or an employee, everyone can get value from their network. And it doesn't have to be about money.

Like a recent example that I experienced myself: I shared a business idea with another independent entrepreneur. She gave me good feedback and some things to think about. Instead of immediately saying: this is not for me, she put me in touch with another independent entrepreneur who I 'met' via Skype the following week and who indicated that she also liked this idea. Now the next steps still have to be taken, but it is a start. That person in turn was looking for entrepreneurs that he could interview for his podcast and vlog. And I put him in touch with an inspiring entrepreneur. This is how you help each other with contacts and inspiration. Without a single euro being involved.
