Biodiversity, an issue eclipsed by the climate crisis

Post by Mitu100@ »

Climate change, an accelerator of the biodiversity crisis
Global warming, sometimes referred to as "overpressure," has the direct consequence of habitat destruction and fragmentation, as well as the scarcity of food sources on which species depend. Climate change is also causing an increase in extreme weather events: while an average of 82 days separated two extreme events in the United States in the 1980s, this period fell to 12 days in 2024 5 . These can lead to the disappearance of species 6 or to forced migrations due to the scarcity of food and water resources. According to the National Museum of Natural History, birds have moved 90 kilometers northward in twenty years, while mountain forests have risen 30 meters over the last fifty years.

Climate change also influences south korea phone number list the evolution of species: turtle eggs become female when the temperature exceeds 31°C. North of the Great Barrier Reef, 87% of turtles are now female, causing certain demographic imbalances.

At the same time, the erosion of biodiversity is accelerating the effects of climate change: carbon sinks are being degraded and are absorbing less and less CO₂.

Despite its vital importance, biodiversity remains a poorly identified issue. The climate crisis is better understood , probably because it has a single indicator. This exclusive focus on Teq CO2 sometimes leads to the adoption of solutions that promote the "energy transition" but which aggravate the erosion of biodiversity.

The State, the instigator of policies in favor of environmental protection, has been late and imperfect in addressing the issues related to biodiversity . However, the intertwining of the climate and biodiversity crises calls for stakeholders, both public and private, to address both issues head on, from the analysis of impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities to the definition of the environmental strategy.
