Sylvia Davis, product and solutions manager for DevOps and AI analytics at Digital.ai, talks to The New Stack about strategies to reduce complexity and realize value from moving applications to a hybrid cloud model.
The appeal of migrating applications to a hybrid cloud model is fueled by growing business benefits: cost savings, consistency, and rapid deployment. Gartner predicts that public cloud spending will grow 21.7% in 2023, largely due to these benefits. However, the path to successful hybrid cloud adoption is complex and often fraught with challenges, from application outages to developer frustration and missed market opportunities. These challenges arise when cloud transformation initiatives, which typically focus on infrastructure migration, fail to properly consider developing governance policies for continuous application delivery.
In this context, and with more variables to manage than spain mobile database before, how do you avoid the classic “what do you do now?” question when something goes wrong? The answer lies in a lifecycle-based approach to continuous application delivery that includes analytics, automation, scalability, governance, and security—elements that contribute to the seamless delivery of high-quality, reliable applications.
Challenges of Application Migration and Delivery in Hybrid Cloud Models
Despite the undeniable benefits of cloud transformation, hybrid cloud models pose a number of challenges. One of the main ones stands out: complexity. As David Linthicum, director of cloud strategy at Deloitte Consulting, says, “… hybrid cloud environments often become siloed clouds that operate autonomously. When this happens, each cloud environment requires dedicated operational teams and procedures, which creates additional complexity, heterogeneity, inconsistency of operations, and security concerns.”
