A report at the BIM breakfast on the difficulties of inventorying all roads in St. Petersburg and the accompanying digitalization of document flow in government agencies.
BIM specialists in the construction of linear objects have repeatedly raised questions about various problems of information modeling in their projects at industry conferences. However, these are not the only difficulties that road workers face in their work.
Thus, Liliya Talipova and Egor Grebenyuk, colleagues from the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and the Nanosoft company, spoke at the June BIM breakfast about the difficulties of inventorying all the roads in St. Petersburg and the accompanying digitalization of document flow in government agencies.

In 2021, the St. Petersburg Transport Committee initiated an inventory of the entire system of city road saudi arabia phone number facilities, covering about 4,000 kilometers of roads. And unlike the Moscow practice, in St. Petersburg, the accounting of the city's road transport system is only moving into a digital format, and in two-dimensional form. In the future, data from 2D diagrams were planned to be introduced into the information system for supporting urban development activities (ISOGD).
The project faced several challenges, including the customer's reluctance to assess the scope and scale of the work and a lack of understanding of the process of completing the tasks. However, they had a clear idea of the end goal of the project: the result was to be a traffic management plan.
Stages of project implementation
Field surveys using mobile laser scanning.
Mobile laser survey was chosen to obtain the initial data. It allows recording the dimensions of road boundaries and all infrastructure elements: lighting, road signs, etc., unlike aerial survey, which was not suitable for urban conditions due to various visibility limitations and flight restrictions for UAVs.
Among the additional difficulties, Liliya Talipova noted the following:
Scanning could be carried out mainly in late spring to avoid natural obstacles in the form of urban greenery
By the time the survey was completed and the point cloud processing began, the data was out of date, as the authorities carried out new construction and modernization of the road transport system during the summer months.
The resulting data was also difficult to process due to difficult shooting conditions, which resulted in a certain amount of noise and unnecessary elements.
