The purpose of data is not so much the collection itself, but rather the analysis and the possibility to use that data to steer or improve. In fact, you measure whether you need to change something, compared to previously created intranet objectives. It is therefore important to pay attention to those intranet objectives. It all sounds logical, and of course it is. Because what else can you do with all that information?



The baseline measurement
To demonstrate the success of the social intranet (for example, better and easier collaboration), you need to make intranet objectives measurable. This starts with the so-called zero measurement, the starting point to which follow-up measurements are related. This way, you monitor progress and are able to analyze improvements more efficiently.

Top tasks
These measurable objectives are primarily aimed at stimulating usage. The targets for an active internal community are 55-40-5 (read-respond-share original content). This is followed by objectives for efficiency and productivity in daily work and, in the long term, employee satisfaction.

How do you measure the use of your social intranet? In absolute figures, this is all the people who log in from scratch and do 'something' on the intranet. The performance of top tasks – as once introduced by Gerry McGovern – can be measured in different ways: by keeping (quantitative) usage statistics and by regularly performing (qualitative) task performance tests. Usage statistics are very valuable in determining how well a top task is actually performing (number of visitors, duration of visit, click path visit, etc.).
