The nearest large lake to Munich is easily accessible by public transport. It takes about 30 minutes by S-Bahn (RER) from the city centre to Starnberg station at the foot of the lake. It is a popular getaway for Munich residents when the weather is nice. With its many swimming, boating and water sports options, its pretty cafés and beer gardens on the truemoney data water, the Starnberger See provides a pleasant holiday feeling, just a few kilometres from the city.
Starnberg is the main town on the lake and attracts the most people. Don't hesitate to go a little further to find quieter spots.
For the most motivated: it is also a beautiful bike ride to do from Munich (count about 3 hours round trip). It is also easy to take your bike on public transport (there are dedicated spaces to put them) to enjoy it once there.

In the vicinity of the lake, also take a look at the beautiful Andechs Abbey. This 15th century Benedictine abbey in Baroque style is a major Bavarian pilgrimage site and is also well-known for its famous brewery – we are still in Germany after all! And on a clear day, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Bavarian Alps from the abbey.
