They decided to start with something simple: the first version of Duolingo had a stock of only 3,000 words. The application's algorithm used them to generate various phrases that the user had to not only read, but also pronounce and write down by ear. Then they planned to fine-tune the learning process using testing.

Why Duolingo Is More Than a Fun Language Learning App
Luis von Ahn chose the name Duolingo for his product for a reason. The part “lingo” is clear: it indicates that the application is related to linguistics. The part “duo” is a reference to the Latin “two, double”. Duolingo, according to the creator’s idea, initially had a dual purpose, like his previous products.
While one part of Duolingo's audience could learn foreign languages for free, the other part tried to earn money by translating texts for those who were learning these languages. It was the opportunity to earn money that brought so many users to the platform immediately after its release.
It quickly became clear that translations were not commercially viable, so this part of the product had to be abandoned in 2014.
However, this has not been an obstacle to Duolingo’s growth. In 2016, the company released the DET (Duolingo English Test), which is now recognized by 5,000 universities worldwide. Now, students from poor countries can more easily take language tests to get into universities.
