To have a hangover

Post by jrineakter »

Hello everyone! We are back for a new episode of the Français Authentique podcast. A new episode means a new French expression. Last week, we saw the expression " couper les cheveux en quatre ". Don't hesitate to go listen to it, if you feel like it, when you have time.

Before revealing the expression of the day, don't forget to sign up for Johan's free course called " 7 rules for speaking French without getting stuck ". It's a course that has existed since the creation of Français Authentique, so, you see, it goes back a little bit, but in the meantime it has been updated, it has been brought up to date, in quotes, and new things have been integrated. So, don't hesitate to sign up to refine your learning of French.

Let's get back to our expression of the day which is, therefore, "avoir la gueule de bois". Without further ado, we will go directly to the explanation of the words that make up this expression.

So, to begin with, we have the word "have," which is the verb "have," which means to exhibit a characteristic. So, we have, to begin with, the word "have," which is a verb and which, here, means to exhibit a characteristic, so, the fact of having something.

Then, the word "gueule", which is the mouth of certain animals. For example, of the wolf, the dog, the reptile, etc. We do not say that they have a mouth but that they have a gueule. And, therefore, when we say the word "gueule", it is rather in the popular register if we want to mean that it is a mouth.

And finally, the word "wood". The word "wood", well it's a material, it's the material of the tree.

Regarding the meaning of the expression. So, originally, the expression, it appeared in the 18th century. In popular language, the word "gueule" designates the mouth, as today. And why "a hangover"? Well, the wood translates the stiffness of the mouth which is dried out after having drunk too much. So, here, it means the laos whatsapp number data state of a person, the general state of a person after having drunk too much alcohol. These are in fact the symptoms after, let's say, a slightly too boozy evening.

I will give you three examples, three different contexts, so that you can better understand the meaning of this expression.

First example: "He drank too much alcohol at the wedding, he has a headache and feels like vomiting, he has a hangover."

Second example:

– Martin is not coming to lunch with us?

– No, he partied yesterday and he's hungover.

Third example: “You have to hydrate a lot and eat lightly to cure your hangover.”

So, in these three examples, you can see that people get hangovers after drinking too much alcohol.

Let's do a little pronunciation exercise with the "gu" sound in the word "gueule". I'm going to pronounce some words and I'll give you time to repeat after me.
