Get as much material from outside sources as possible. Research everything that appears in your book: from historical events to biological processes to artificial intelligence.
I even traveled to the places where my novel takes place.
In my first book, I followed my main character's route from the Isle of Skye through Wales to London - and that changed my plot fundamentally.
