Back then I always asked myself: Why is it called that in such a strange way in English?
Do copywriters simply steal and copy their texts?
Of course not.
"Copy" in this context means:
a) Text to be printed (i.e. copied) in the newspaper.
b) Text for printed advertisements such as posters, flyers or magazines that are to be copied.
Say:
The text is intended to be copied and distributed many times – that's why it was called "Copy".
And that’s why it’s called copywriting today – even if the text is no longer printed.
By the way:
Images, design elements and buttons are not part of copywriting – that is the job of the designer.
