The many faces of sustainability – a general look at the UN's sustainability goals

Post by suchona.kani.z »

Sustainability has many faces and is not just limited to ecology and climate. In two blog posts, I have described the consequences that this megatrend can have on the banking world. In this post, I would like to go beyond the industry-specific features and take a general look at the topic of sustainability based on the United Nations' sustainability goals. Understanding the goals is important: With the global sustainability agenda, the United Nations defines the elementary foundations and provides orientation for the sustainable development of society, politics and the economy.

What spectrum does the agenda cover? What exactly is behind the goals and what could possible approaches for greater sustainability look like? In this article, I will specifically address these questions. Because, similar to a visit to the doctor, without a clear diagnosis (understanding), any therapy (measures) would only be partially successful.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were launched in 2016 with a term of 15 years. They define a total of 17 sustainability goals with 169 associated sub-goals that must be achieved by 2030 within the framework of sustainable development.

What all goals have in common is that they serve a clear, overarching goal: a global plan is intended to promote the worldwide safeguarding of sustainable development on an economic, social and ecological level. The vision is to create a sustainable world community that increases global prosperity, reduces inequalities in living standards, ensures greater equality of opportunity and ensures the sustainable use of natural resources.

With the SDGs, the global community of 193 states commits itself to translating the shared vision into national development plans in order to enable a life of dignity worldwide while at the same time permanently preserving the natural foundations of life. A closer look at the 17 individual goals sharpens the understanding of the need for action.
