After failing the university entrance exams several times

Around the age of 12, he developed an interest in English, but had no idea where to start: so he began working as a free tour guide for tourists in Hangzhou - which had become a tourist mecca after Nixon's visit - in order to improve his command of the English language, while understanding that China and the world in general were very different from what his teachers had portrayed.


He graduated in 1988 with a major in English and, after a greece email list dozen rejections, finally found a job as a professor. The turning point in his life came in 1995: while working as a translator in the United States, a computer with Internet access came into his hands. That day, the soon-to-be-online commerce giant found himself in front of a search engine for the first time: he typed in the first word that came to mind.
