No Phone Number—Using Slack and Zoom Only

In a world where having a phone number is almost considered mandatory for communication, I’ve taken a different route by operating completely without one. Instead of relying on phone calls or texts, I use Slack and Zoom exclusively for both professional and personal communication. This might sound unconventional, but it has significantly improved how I manage my time, set boundaries, and stay connected without the constant interruptions typical of phone calls. By removing a phone number from the equation, I’ve gained greater control over my communication and mental space, all while maintaining efficient, clear, and real-time interactions with clients, colleagues, and friends.
Slack has become my go-to platform for messaging, project special database collaboration, and day-to-day check-ins. Its asynchronous nature means people can send messages, share files, and organize conversations without demanding immediate responses. This feature alone has drastically reduced the pressure to always be “on” and available, something that phone calls tend to create. Zoom complements Slack perfectly by providing face-to-face interaction when necessary, especially for meetings, brainstorming sessions, or client consultations. Together, these tools create a communication ecosystem that supports both quick interactions and deeper conversations without the downsides of phone calls—no spam, no dropped calls, and no random interruptions. Clients and colleagues quickly adapt once they understand the benefits of these platforms and the boundaries they provide.
Of course, living and working without a phone number isn’t without its challenges. There are moments when a quick phone call might seem more straightforward or when emergency situations demand urgent communication. To navigate this, I establish clear protocols, such as prioritized Slack channels for urgent matters and scheduled Zoom calls for immediate discussions. I also ensure that all contacts have alternative ways to reach me and that expectations are set clearly from the beginning. This approach requires intentionality but leads to healthier communication habits and a better work-life balance. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by constant phone calls or want to regain control of your communication, switching to Slack and Zoom—without a phone number—could be a refreshing and effective solution.
