21 Important New Features Social Media Launched in 2012 (So You Don't Get Lost in 2013) December 28, 2012
As the year draws to a close, it's time to recap and review the most important social media developments of 2012 (in case we missed any). HubSpot has compiled 21 key tips for your business marketing strategy.

1. Facebook's global pages.
Since October, brands with an international presence can bring country email list all their fans together on a single page, while maintaining personalized, country-specific content management and updates.

2. Facebook mobile ads.
In March, Facebook began including ads on mobile devices, but it wasn't until June that it made it easier and more automated to order mobile-only ads.

3. More options for segmenting updates on Facebook.
In addition to location and language, segmentation can be done based on gender, age, interests, educational level, etc.

4. Open Graph: The wonderful world of Facebook apps.
Earlier this year, Facebook opened its Open Graph platform to all developers, allowing external websites to integrate with Facebook and allowing users to automatically share updates related to third-party content on their timelines.

5. Facebook buys Instagram.
It was in April, they paid a billion dollars and the price shocked the market… although not as much as the controversy generated just a few days ago by Instagram's new (and subsequently withdrawn) terms of use.

Introduced in June, they offer the option to see trending topics based on a user's location and the people they follow.
