But where the average internet user had an account on only three different platforms in 2012, that number had risen to eight in 2016. This trend continues.

The offer is bigger, but above all: we are increasingly better at satisfying our own social media preferences. A trend that is visible is that we are increasingly choosing platforms that serve a niche of target groups such as young girls, single young adults or gamers. Below I will briefly explain six different platforms that respond to a certain niche:

1. Musical.ly
A lip-sync app that focuses primarily on young girls (8 – 16 hospitals email list years old) and is therefore extremely popular among this target group.

2. Medium
A blogging platform where users can read and publish high-quality pieces. This platform focuses on the (young) adult and business reader.

3. Researchgate

4. Lego Life
A social media platform for children between 7 and 12 years old from the Lego toy manufacturer.

5. Houseparty
From the makers of Meerkat, it lets you video chat with up to eight friends at once. Teens are using it a lot.

6. Twitch.tv
A streaming service for gamers. Here users can watch top players of their favorite game live and chat with others.
