The COVID-19 pandemic has had an extraordinary impact on people’s lives, both personally and at work. It has created challenges that the vast majority of people have never encountered. For businesses, the real shock has been digital transformation, and in particular the use of data. Companies around the world have had to move the majority of their workforces to remote work overnight, abandon multi-year development plans, and change operating models.

Companies have dramatically accelerated the pace of cloud migration and virtual collaboration solutions to ensure that their new remote workforce has access to the tools and information they need to be secure and productive. This has been and continues to be a key challenge. It’s important to learn from the past, but are there enough lessons to avoid a groping path in the future? With many of the changes brought about by the coronavirus likely to be permanent, what can organizations expect from the evolution of data in 2021 and beyond and, crucially, how can IT leaders prepare for it?

So, while the pre-pandemic data strategy message for IT leaders might have been “move,” in 2021 it’s “move faster.” The push toward a digital future is accelerating, meaning more organizations are looking to make data an integral part of their strategy, from operational decision making to customer engagement. Fast, seamless access to and insights from data will be vital to business.
