Oracle Database Cloud Services at a Glance

At the time of writing this article, there are a total of four options for operating databases in the Oracle Cloud or having them operated as "Database-as-a-Service". This article therefore attempts to provide an overview of the variety of corresponding offers and to work out the differences that are not always apparent at first glance. In order not to go beyond the scope, this only concerns the "classic" Oracle database as an RDBMS. Also available and/or announced Oracle Cloud services whose implementation is based on other data storage systems (MySQL, NoSQL, Big Data) are therefore not taken into account here.

To better understand and classify the various DBaaS options in the Oracle Cloud, it is useful to differentiate them into two dimensions:
firstly, according to the type of administration of the service ("managed" vs. "automated" vs. "non-managed"), and secondly, according to the nature of the service, which is reflected in different feature sets and sizes. Let us first look at the first aspect.
