Have you ever thought about the size of your internet footprint? This is not a meaningless question. Did you know that every click in the virtual world, interaction on websites or social networks, news read or even online purchases made leave traces with data that can be captured by companies? The use of them is not an enemy or a villain. But the lack of data security can be, as we will see in this content.

Is it possible to maintain data security on the internet?
A survey by the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban), conducted to assess people's perceptions of data security in Brazil and crimes involving personal data breaches , showed that the majority of people interviewed (53%) believe they have control over their data. Although this is the majority, there is still a significant portion (44%) who believe they have little or no control.

Conducted in 2021, the survey also revealed that, even though people believe they have some control, data capture by companies and even governments is a concern. The results are part of the 7th edition of the Febraban Observatory – Febraban-IPESPE Survey .

According to data from Febraban, in the first two months of 2021, phishing attacks (a fraud system that captures data) increased by 100% compared to the same period in the previous year. Scams involving fake call centers increased by 340%.

As this type of attack increases, so do the layers of protection. Therefore, it is possible to maintain data security, but this concern must start with the user. One of the essential precautions is to pay attention to the traces left on the internet.

How to keep personal data safe on the internet?
Data security involves paying particular attention to the type of content you publish or the website you visit. Therefore, it is very important to pay attention to:

To information that is provided online;
The passwords you use. Ideally, you should change kuwait whatsapp number code them frequently, especially those used for emails, social networks, and banking or card apps;
To unknown links: never click on links sent by unknown sources. Before clicking, check the origin of the message and its sender;
To the “double factor activation” security function: Use it whenever you have this option in emails, social networks, applications.
When shopping online: avoid saving logins and passwords, as well as credit cards, on shopping sites, even those you use frequently;
What you share on social media: Some information can provide clues about your profile and behavior, such as places you frequent and consumption habits, which opens up loopholes for cybercriminals.
Data security needs to be a common concern for companies and users. Therefore, it is important for companies to have qualified teams to reduce the chances of fraud and system vulnerability.

This is possible through specific tools that help protect users' and companies' data, such as software, firewalls, and biometrics — to name just a few. In addition, these protections help share information online in a much safer way.

It can be preventive, when investing in mechanisms to prevent the leaking or sharing of information, or reactive, when the objective is to reduce data after exposure.

Furthermore, data security is based on some well-defined aspects, such as confidentiality (guaranteeing that only authorized people can access certain data), integrity (when the integrity and veracity of the data is preserved), compliance (ensuring that the data is in accordance with current legislation) and availability (the data must be accessible to those authorized to access it).

What does the data security law say?
Four out of every ten companies headquartered in Brazil take measures to prevent the leaking of personal and confidential data, according to a study by the Regional Center for Studies for the Development of the Information Society ( Cetic) .

The survey was conducted based on responses from more than 4,000 businesspeople between August 2021 and April 2022. Cetic also revealed that preventive actions to avoid data leaks have grown by 42% in the last two years, as well as a 10% increase in data attacks in the first months of 2021.

In this sense, the General Data Protection Law (LGPD), approved in September 2021, to organize and discipline this market, meant that data was treated by companies with more responsibility, respect and security, without exposing its owners (users).

In fact, as people's access to the internet and applications improved, a greater amount of data began to circulate freely over the internet. The difference is that before the LGPD there were no regulations. This information circulated in a gray area , being practically at the fingertips of anyone or, worse, cybercriminals.

As fraud increased and, consequently, losses to companies due to the misuse of data or even the capture of data without the user's consent, the warning light went on. The impact on reputation and finances, which is not small, was decisive in driving the creation of regulatory frameworks.

Experts believe that worldwide losses due to data leaks amount to around US$4 million each year. Therefore, the market adapted and quickly created mechanisms to regulate the use of this information to protect both users and companies' cash flow.

The Brazilian LGPD follows the model adopted in Europe and brings together more than 40 different statutes that govern personal data, whether online or offline. Although they claim to be familiar with the LGPD, more than 70% of companies are still not prepared to comply with the new legislation.

Brazilians are also unaware of the importance of data. The same Febraban study, already mentioned in this content, revealed that 37% say they know “very well” or “more or less” about the LGPD, while 60% say they “have heard about it”.
